Incredible Victorian British Officers Campaign Tin Trunk made by Chubb & Sons of 68 ,St James, London. Named on front to Captain James Henry Bowman, Derbyshire Regiment.

Henry James Bowman born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent on the 5th August 1860. In 1881, Bowman was a young Militia Lieutenant living at home, but his life was about to take a global turn. He was appointed Lieutenant the 95th Derbyshire Regiment. Following his promotion to Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, 95th Derbyshire Regiment on the 28th of January 1882, Bowman saw action in nearly every major late-Victorian conflict. Serving in Egypt in 1882 and Sikkim in 1888, where two companies of the regiment provided the only British troops involved in the campaign. Promoted to Captain in January 1890 seeing action during the North-West Frontier’s Tirah campaign, including the actions of Dargai on 18 October 1897, and the forcing of the Sampagha and Arhanga Passes. It was during this campaign at Mastura where Captain Bowman was severely wounded. London gazette states he received a severe flesh wound in the arm and shoulder by gunshot at Mastura on 13 November 1897.

In June 1902 Henry James Bowman was made Recruiting Staff Officer garrisoned at Manchester with the Derbyshire Regiment. After Home service he retired in 1904 and moved to Aylsham in 1908 but this was short lived, with the outbreak of the First World War at the age of 54 he was back on the active list like a shot! Being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1915 spending the war on active home service stationed as Commandant of Stobs Castle POW Camp in the Scottish Lowlands.

He died at manor house Aylsham, Norfolk, on 22 June 1925 aged 64, where his ashes under the memorial in the Manor garden

This Trunk would undoubtedly have followed him through The Tirah Campaign in which he was wounded. An Incredible piece of Military history.

With twin folding handles to the flanks, Chubb & Son patented lock. Internal metal compartment divider. This piece would have been used to store imperative military documents and correspondence to be used as a makeshift desk and writing slope.

Measuring 46cms long, 33cms wide and 33.5cms tall
